Museum Assistant

  

Accountable to:  Learning Engagement Manager

Accountable for: Creating a welcoming, accessible and vibrant visitor attraction. The postholder ensures visitor contact is a positive experience. 

Location: Sulgrave Manor


Job Summary:

Sulgrave Manor is a popular heritage attraction located in the lovely village of Sulgrave. The Manor is a fine example of a Tudor and Georgian house which was built and lived in by the direct ancestors of George Washington, the first President of the USA.


This postholder ensures that visitor contact is a positive experience. You will be managing the day to day running of our shop, helping open up and close down the site and providing excellent customer service to our visitors. Visitor areas to be kept tidy and clean. A knowledge of the history of the site is important, and you will be able to step in to cover volunteers in the house when necessary. Additionally, you will be willing to learn about our school’s programme and will be able to assist with school, group visits, and events on occasions.

This post is ideal for someone who wants to work in the heritage sector, there will be the chance to gain experience in lots of different areas of museum work.

Occasionally situations may arise that require the post holder to perform other duties or tasks as might be reasonably requested by the Manor. In addition, all employees are expected to work within the terms of their contract of employment and adhere to the Manor’s policies.


Contract type: Seasonal March 16th – September 27th, with possibility of extension. £13.00 per hour.

Hours: Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays 10:00 – 16:15, 15 min break. Additional hours will be available

Working Pattern: Includes Sundays and bank holidays

 

Key Responsibilities

· Shop

o Provide a warm welcome to visitors in our gift shop, run the day-to-day operation of the shop including selling tickets, gift shop items and refreshments.

o Operating the coffee machine and serving customers refreshments in Brew House.

o Carry out front of house checks

o Answering telephone enquiries

o Collect visitor data

o Monitor stock levels

o Keep the visitor areas clean and tidy

o Undertake basic food preparation duties

o Comply with food hygiene standards

o Perform other duties as required

· House duties:

o To be able to step in and give introductory talks when we are short of volunteers.

o To assist locking up the house at the end of the day, making sure everything is tidy and in its place.

o To ensure the craft activity resources and children’s costumes are in place ready.

· Schools duties:

o To have a good working knowledge of all aspects of Learning Engagement Team’s schools’ programme.

o To facilitate the schools’ programmes, including leading workshops independently and as part of a team to the highest possible standard.

· Informal Learning and Family Friendly Activities

o To assist with the preparation of informal learning at the property, including setting up resources for themed activities, crafts and trails.

o To facilitate the informal learning and family friendly activities, including leading activities independently and as part of a team to the highest possible standard.

· Being a friendly face to all our visitors, welcoming them to the Manor and answering any questions they may have.

Health, Safety and Security

· To be familiar with and follow Sulgrave Manor’s Health & Safety policy at all times and be aware of emergency procedures.

· To be familiar with and follow Sulgrave Manor’s Safeguarding Young People and Vulnerable Adults policy at all times

· To complete training as requested by the Learning Engagement Manager, including safeguarding training

· To have an up to date DBS certificate


Person Specification:

Good education to further or higher level

Knowledge of health and safety and safguarding

An interest in history


Experience

Experience of cash handling

Experience of working in a heritage setting (desirable).
