Of special interest to:
Americans - As the ancestral home of their first
President, George Washington, Sulgrave offers USA visitors
a sense of pilgrimage to their country's roots. Tours
can be led by 'Lawrence Washington' - the ancestor who
built the house. Independence Day (July 4th) is celebrated
with a feast of Americana.
Embroiderers - The New Elizabethan Embroideries
display eight years work by 500 British and American stitchers
producing the splendid modern centrepiece of a collection
of historic textiles. The New Elizabethan Embroideries
are well-known to this interest group through extensive
coverage in specialist magazines. (Tours primarily interested
in the embroideries should check that they will be on
display on the chosen date, as they are occasionally 'rested'
to maintain their good condition).
Gardeners - The lovely gardens include herbaceous
borders, an knot garden with traditional herbs, an orchard
underplanted with thousands of daffodils, lawns, yew
hedges and topiary. Herbs and unusual perennials are
sold in the courtyard from Easter to September.
Herb enthusiasts - Housing the headquarters of
the National Society of Herbs, the Sulgrave gardens
host the National Herb Garden and their Chelsea prize
winning exhibit.
