The Inside Out - Sculpture Exhibition
During 2006 the Manor orchard was the back-cloth for Pam
Foley's 'From the Inside Out' exhibition. Although the exhibit is no longer on show, Pam Foley, an American sculptress now resident
in England and thus a personification of the link the
Manor symbolises, continues to create arresting work which
rewards attention.
The title "From The Inside Out" refers
to the process used in creating these sculptures. Each
original was modelled from clay, and then a plaster mould
formed around it. Into this mould was layered coloured
fibreglass, from the surface inwards, to produce the final
cast. The title also refers to some of the inspirations
for this project: the inner structures of apple blossom,
the apple itself, and the forms which develop during the
flowering, germination, seasonal growth, and decay processes
involved in the life cycle of an apple tree.
My goal with this project was to combine a colour sense
acquired from years spent living in Northern California
with sculptures destined for an apple orchard. The multi-layered
effect Ive developed allowed me to produce these
seasonal sculptures in my chosen media of fibreglass and
resin, melding a painterly approach with a three-dimensional
outcome. Through the use of the female form, the sculptures
progress through fertility, reproduction and maturity,
to deterioration, death and remembrance.
Installation in an apple orchard parallels the archetypal
nature of the work. Having spent my formative years in
Maine, a state with over four centuries of apple production,
I was immediately drawn to this orchard during my first
visit. As the seasons change, one sculpture will predominate
over the others, as a reminder of seasonal and cyclical
progression. I envisage the changing seasonal lighting
in the orchard permeating the translucence of each piece.
Completion of this nine-month project has brought me to
the end of a cycle.
